Because It's Much Better to Give than Take: Oregon Recycler's Laptops Stolen

What is it about the holiday season? It throws a spotlight on the best -- and worst -- aspects of human nature. It holds true in the open source world. NextStep, a hardware recycling and refurbishing organization in Eugene, Oregon, was burglarized earlier this week. Hardest hit was the organization's Ubuntu Laptop Program. NextStep provides computers, technology and job skills training to Lane County Oregon's under-served residents, and its Ubuntu Laptop Program is a major source of funding for these endeavors.

That's the bad news. The good news is that helping NextStep might be as easy as looking through that box of hardware you've got in your office.

Funambol Users Weigh In on Ads in Mobile Applications

In early October, Lisa wrote about open source mobile push and sync provider Funambol, and its decision to try supporting its services with ad revenue. Lisa felt (and OStatic commenters seemed to agree) that as long as the service was good, and the ads weren't intrusive, it wasn't a bad trade.

Today, Funambol released the results of its user survey regarding its ad funded mobile email service. The survey results echo some of the comments here -- ads that are non-intrusive, relevant, and respect user privacy are acceptable when subsidizing the cost of useful, free applications. It seems targeted ads, paired with the right services, could prove to be a solid market model.

Here's what you'll find under the hood.

OpenSolaris Coming to Toshiba Laptops--Continuing a Trend

Slowly but surely, major laptop vendors are taking to the idea of shipping systems with pre-loaded open source operating systems. The latest case in point is Toshiba--one of the longest-standing players in the market for portable computers--and its new plan to pre-install Sun Microsystems' OpenSolaris on its laptops. The machines are supposed to ship in early 2009, and will join several new Linux-based systems that Dell is shipping, and many Linux-based netbooks arriving from various hardware manufacturers. Will this trend continue?

Will Open Source Conferences Go the Way of BrainShare?

GigaOm did an interesting piece on Wednesday called The End of MacWorld, addressing the fact that Apple is pulling out of the Macworld trade show after January, and Steve Jobs won't do a keynote address there. The piece includes some good analysis of how rapidly technology is undermining the status quo at trade shows and conferences. Then, just yesterday, Novell announced that it is cancelling BrainShare after 20 years. Will this erosion of high-profile gatherings extend to the major open source conferences?

Source Code For Twitter-Like App, Trillr, Now Available

Developers of Trillr, a microblogging project similar to Twitter, announced this week that its source code is now available to anyone who wants it. The idea for Trillr was conceived in 2007 as a peer group experiment among team members who wanted to learn more about Python and Django, and was created as an enterprise tool with enhanced features like group discussion and a user directory.

Trillr project member Stefan Aust admits the code base is kind of crappy as it stands now, but that's to be expected since it was part of a learning process. He says that, looking back, he would have done some things differently but notes, perfect source code does not create communities. Our source code can.

OpenItOnline: A Firefox Extension for Quickly Viewing Files Using Web Apps

Here is an interesting Firefox extension if you open documents and spreadsheets frequently in online hosted applications such as Google's, Zoho's or ThinkFree: OpenItOnline. (Hat tip to DownloadSquad for calling this one out.)? You can install this extension in a minute or so, and create file type associations that will default to the online applications you specify to open files. This saves you from, say, having to install Microsoft Word, OpenOffice Writer, or another application to open a .doc file, or a standalone image viewer to look at an image. Here's a peek at how it works.
