Pencil: An Interesting Drawing Add-On for Firefox 3

The other day, we covered Firefox extensions for those tinkering with the new version 3 of the browser. Now, Webworkerdaily has a highly interesting addition to our list: Pencil--a Firefox extension that requires the new version 3.? By coupling the Gecko drawing engine with the ability to display, save, and load an external canvas, together with a palette of shapes, Pencil installs an entire drawing application into your Firefox browser, notes WWD. As is true of Dia, Pencil works, in some ways, similarly to Microsoft's Visio visualization application. Check out WWD's experience with it.

Essential Firefox Extensions for Version 3 Tinkerers

Now that the new version of Mozilla's Firefox browser is out, many of us are still busy customizing it with favorite extensions, and more. Slowly but surely, I've been able to get my favorite extensions working as I want them to, including the libraries of information that some of them are designed to manage. I continue to find updates to many extensions for the new Firefox, and I notice that others around the web are doing so as well. Here are some top recommendations.

Webware: 2 Fixes for Firefox 3

Webware has a good story on two quick fixes for Firefox 3.? While I've found the new version of the browser to be an excellent upgrade, I did have both of the problems described in the Webware post, and both of the fixes worked well for me. The first problem involves glitches in playing Flash files. A simple upgrade to the Flash 10 beta is indeed a fix. The second problem, which I suspect many people are having, regards incompatibilities with some Firefox extensions and the new version 3 browser. As Webware prescribes, MR Tech Toolkit and Nightly Tester Tools are workarounds. Check out Webware's complete discussion.

Firefox 3: Finally Available, But Slow to Download

As Mike noted earlier, Mozilla dropped the ball on its goal of delivering the new Firefox 3 browser at its planned time this morning. However, after hours of waiting, I have just downloaded it (the download took several minutes), and you can too.? Mozilla will take some heat for the downtime today, when the goal was to set a world record for software downloads, but Firefox 3 remains good news. Unlike the pre-release versions, this new version does support many of my extensions--though not all. We're predicting that this version will send Firefox's market share above 20 percent. Speed and memory handling will get people to upgrade or switch. Here's more.

Firefox 3 - Good PR, Poor Execution

Today's official release of Firefox 3 was widely anticipated. The Mozilla folks spent considerable time promoting Download Day - we covered it, as well as a host of other outlets up to and including Time magazine. Unfortunately, someone apparently didn't do enough load planning: as of right now, around an hour after the software was released, all of the official download sites seem to be down from sheer overload.

GigaOm: Will Firefox Mobile Make It in Time?

You may have seen our recent coverage of Mozilla's work on a new mobile browser, dubbed Fennec.? It has tremendous promise, in some people's eyes, as a svelte browser that can deliver a Firefox-like experience on upcoming Android- and Linux-based phones. Over on our sister site, GigaOm, Stacey Higginbotham has an interesting rebuttal, though: She says it may be too late for Mozilla. She argues that Webkit-based browsers are farther along, and points to the success of Opera Mini as a mobile browser. Check it out.
