A Look at LiMo: Interview with David "Lefty" Schlesinger

David Before there was Android or MeeGo, there was the LiMo Foundation. Founded in January 2007, the foundation was established to provide a Linux-based platform for mobile devices. Despite being around longer, LiMo hasn't gotten quite as much attention as other Linux mobile efforts.

To get some insight into LiMo, we talked with David Lefty Schlesinger, who chairs the LiMo Foundation's Open Source Committee and works for LiMo member ACCESS as its director of Open Source Technologies.

The Google Open Source Team team reviewed more than 365 applications before choosing the final 150 accepted mentoring organizations for this year's Google Summer of Code. Some names on the list are a holdover from previous years, while others are new after Google [bid a] fond farewell to some past participants in favor of bringing new projects into the program. You can check out the whole list on the project's Web site. As part of the mentoring application process, organizations were required to submit an Ideas List of suggested student projects. Check out the link next to each organization's profile to get an idea of what kinds of things student participants will be working on.

The role of a mentoring organization is to provide a list of projects for students to choose from, and shepherd a student through the Summer of Code process. The organization is also expected to provide feedback and a written evaluation of the student's work, as well as make sure work is down well and turned in on time.



Web Notable Tim Bray Joins Google, Will Push Android

Tim Bray, a well-known web guru who was working at Oracle via its acquisition of Sun Microsystems, has left the company and joined Google, where he will be a developer advocate for the Android OS. This morning I work for Google, Bray announced in a blog post. Bray is one of the inventors of Extensible Markup Language (XML). He expressed firm support for Google's policies and practices with Android, and raised questions about Apple's closed strategies with the iPhone.

reMail E-mail Search Tool Is Going Open Source

Popular iPhone email search app reMail was recently purchased by Google. As a result of the purchase, reMail has no longer been available in the App Store. Now, reMail founder Gabor Cselle has made a second announcement with good news for fans: reMail?s code is going open source. It?s being distributed under an Apache 2.0 license via Google Code. If Google's Phone/Android Strategy Threatens Carriers, Will They Fold?

Are the networks we depend on for our smartphones and other mobile devices destined to stay mediocre? Funambol's Fabrizio Capobianco, who can usually be counted on for good insight into all things related to mobile open source technology, has an interesting post up on the topic, titled What if the carriers want the network to be crap? ?

In it, he notes that many observers predict that Google might eventually leverage something like Google Voice to allow for VoIP calls that would eliminate the need for expensive carrier contracts. And, he notes, that creates an incentive for network providers to avoid throwing millions into upgrading their networks and deliberately keep them mediocre. Here is why that won't happen, though.



Registration for Google I/O Conference Closed; Event Sold Out

Registration for this year's Google I/O Conference has scarcely been open two months and it's already sold out. Google announced today that it is formally closing registration for the event, slated to be held on May 19-20 at Moscone West in San Francisco.

Google representatives say this is the first time the event has sold out this quickly, and well over 4,000 people are expected to attend. The event brings more than 4,000 developers together for a two-day sprint through sessions about some of Google's most popular products and tools, including App Engine, Google Web Toolkit, Android, and Chrome.



The Apple/HTC Lawsuit: All About Chrome OS?

You have probably heard about the lawsuit Apple has filed against HTC--the big handset maker--claiming patent infringement. Apple doesn?t like what HTC is doing with Android on phones it is selling in the U.S., and claims that HTC infringes on numerous iPhone patents. Firefox's Browser Share Drops While Google Chrome's Rises

After many months of consecutive market share gains, Mozilla's Firefox browser has just seen its third straight market share loss, according to new data from NetApplications.? The share losses for Firefox aren't huge, but they do mark a reversal from remarkable growth for the browser over the past several years. Most notably of all, though, Google's open source Chrome browser appears to be taking market share from Firefox and other browsers.
