Linux Netbook Returns: Not Surprising, but Likely Avoidable

Laptop Magazine talked to MSI's Director of US Sales, Andy Tung about the future of netbooks. Tung discussed future netbook sales and releases -- and presented the statistic that Linux-based netbooks are four times more likely to be returned.

jkOnTheRun reasons that this isn't terribly surprising. Considering the low price of Linux netbooks, and their rarity at larger retailers that might allow new users to kick the tires, it seems that many new users leap, then look.

The return rate of Linux netbooks is pertinent to both netbook manufacturers and Linux users, and is not limited to FOSS acceptance -- or the bottom line.



Another Linux Distro for Asus' Eee PC Laptops: eeebuntu

Our sister blog jkOnTheRun has a good story about eeebuntu, a new Ubuntu Linux distribution that is specifically customized for Asus' popular Eee PC laptops. You can go with the snazzy Compiz Fusion enabled GNOME version or go plain-vanilla with the Ubuntu Netbook Remix packages. You can get the distro here, and you can quickly return to the Eee PC's normal Xandros Linux if you want. Quite a bit of open source software comes with eeebuntu, including Working WiFi, OpenOffice, Pidgin, Skype, Firefox 3.0.1, and the VLC media player. Xandros Reportedly Buying Linspire

Practical Technology is reporting tonight that California-based Linux distributor Linspire is being bought by Canadian Linux vendor Xandros. Linspire CEO Larry Kettler alerted stockholders this afternoon of the decision to sell all of Linspire's assets, including the company's free version, Linspire, and its Click N' Run desktop installation platform.
