Useless For Encrypting USB Flash Drives

Needs administrator rights to even start the software!!! Completely useless

Kicks Ass...

I used Cryptainer LE, which is good but there is a 25 Mb limit on encrypted containers. Switching to Truecrypt was a no-brainer. There is no limit to container sizes, and it's super easy to use. I use TrueCrypt to secure all my client data on my laptop and to secure data on a USB drive. If you are looking for an excellent and free (and probably the best) way to secure your data - truecrypt it is!

Admin Rights Required

It used to be that you needed admin rights to encrypt/decrypt, and this was problematic on public computers where you might want to use an encrypted USB.

The Best There Is...

Be sure to use the tutorial and DON'T create a file on a compressed drive.

Very powerful app and Awesome security. Best part is that most of the default settings will fulfill just about any security need out there.

Gems and Additions from Datamation's Security Software Roundup

Datamation has a good piece out titled 50 Must-Have Open Source Tools for Security. The applications are organized into categories such as encryption, anti-virus and forensics. When it comes to security software, both the open source arena and the freeware arena offer very solid applications. Here are a few open source security apps that I agree with Datamation on, and some top-notch freeware choices to boot.

TrueCrypt 6.0: Better Software for the Paranoid

You and I may have taken the 4th of July off, but the folks over at TrueCrypt didn't. Instead, they pushed out version 6.0 of their on-the-fly encryption utility, with more options than ever for protecting - and hiding - the critical data on your hard drives. Available for Linux, OS X, and Windows, the software is licensed under its own TrueCrypt license, which is not OSI-approved.

Is My data Gone forever?

My 40GB external HD will mount but .. windows says it 'is not a recognizable file type' and wants to format the drive.

any suggestions? I'm stumped.

Using Truecrypt to mount a file on a Network Drive?

I keep all my documents on a server which I connect to via a Network Share. I can't make TrueCrypt work if I try to create a virtual encrypted disk in this folder (on the Network Share.)

Will TrueCrypt only make and mount files on a local drive or am I missing something?

Encrypting Windows XP?

I am considering encrypting windows xp including the boot partition. Will this lead to a significant decrease in performance and will this make it difficult for me to install ubuntu later on using dual boot (grub loader)?

Truecrypt: Mounted vs Unmounted

On Truecrypt, What is difference between "mounted" and "unmounted"? You need it to be mounted in order to move files but is there an issue with having it mounted at all times?
