Ubuntu, Ubuntu, Ubuntu What Can I Say!

First of all I just want to say, I love the whole idea about this OS. I am from Africa and I know exactly what the word means and to bring that into the software world is just a brilliant idea.

I love the humanity thing, and actually using Ubuntu feels more human that any other OS (esp. M$ ones). It's amazing flexibility in customizing it, the host of application readily available to downloaded from the internet. The different "flavors", the NO - CLEAR & PRESENT DANGER feeling it gives, the COMMUNITY behind it( I can just go on for day about this ...)

As the title goes what can I say?

Well I know I sound like somebody in crazy-love with the software and I have my reasons to be but there are still some issues to be dealt with. One would be hardware compatibility, I mean come on this is Africa, we still have dial-ups and for an OS that supposed to be humanly to all people, I just don't see it happening with out a decent coverage of such essential piece of hardware. The other thing would be .......................... well nothing, for the life of me I just can't see what could be a "problem" with using this OS. A very small one would be the dominance of WIndows (particularly XP in our county) but who know one of these days it would all change.

Hey anything can happen even Obama go the nomination right ?!?!?!?!

Ubuntu Server 8.04

- Ubuntu Server 8.04 is extensible enough to be used in enterprise-scale implementations as well as personal use. Its slowly catching on and replacing Debian systems at my company.

- Long Term Support (LTS) means it will have security updates for at least 5 years, which means it will be supported at least until April 2013.

- There is only one version of Ubuntu Server, which is completely free for enterprise as well as personal use. Optional paid support is available through Canonical.

For The Home And Office!

If you need a stable operating system for either your home or business Ubuntu is the system of choice. But why? you ask well Ubuntu detects most existing hardware on todays desktops and laptops. Ubuntu also has a number of bundled software applications such as OpenOffice, Gimp, Rhythmbox music player, FireFox and many more. Ubuntu is also very easy to use and to learn. It is also extremely stable and secure like all versions of Linux. Sure Ubuntu does have it's faults since it does not use Windows designed software but even this too has a solution in Ubuntu which has software alternatives or applications such as WINE to help most users in this area. Also the best part of all is the great community it has around it. If you need tech support or simply how to get things done someone in the community is always willing to help. Now all this applies to both Home and Business users. But the best part is that businesses can benefit from this because Ubuntu offers a wide range of solutions that are already part of the vast Linux server ecosystem. A few examples I can think of are email server applications, collaboration tools, desktop and network administration tools etc... So give it a shot! I use it for work and home on a daily basis.

Canonical Set to Release Ubuntu 9.10 Server Edition

ubuntu

There's news out of Canonical today that the release of Ubuntu 9.10 Server Edition -- codenamed Karmic Koala -- is just around the corner. It's the greenest release yet, with a heavy emphasis on power management and cloud computing tools.

Ubuntu 9.10 includes Ubuntu Enterprise Cloud (UEC), a system designed to help users build and support private clouds. It's underlying technology relies on Eucalyptus, an open source infrastructure for implementing cloud computing on clusters.

The First Moblin Version 2 Netbook Comes From Dell

We've been reporting this week on excitement surrounding netbooks running the new Moblin version 2 operating system, and how many different directions Moblin may go in. At the Intel Developer Forum conference this week, Intel showed a smartphone running the operating system, with its own chips powering the phone.  While Intel has officially handed over stewardship of Moblin to The Linux Foundation, the company is demonstrating its belief in Moblin for many types of hardware platforms ranging from netbooks, to smartphones, to Mobile Internet Devices (MIDs).

Intel has a long history of high-profile partnerships with big technology companies such as Microsoft and Dell, and that's why I'm not surprised to see that the first netbook running Moblin version 2 is Dell's very well-liked Mini 10v (shown). It's set to ship with Canonical's Moblin remix of Ubuntu, and is evidence that Dell--the world's number two computer manufacturer--remains committed to shipping Linux-based netbooks.

Mount a linux drive on XP and Vice Versa?

I am using two o/s ( Xp Sp 2 and Ubuntu 5.04) on different drives. The issue is that when am using one, i cant see the other drive.

I use linux to surf the net because i understand that its not easily attacked by virus but after i have downloaded some notes and programs i'd like to turn back Xp to access those programs reason being am comfortable using XP which is where the problem arises.

As a result, I am forced to dowload them to flashdisk so that I can access them from there. Would appreciate any help because this is a tiring process i have to undergo everyday.

How can we, the Voters, tell the Presidential Candidates about this most important matter?

What kind of mass marketing style petition can we, the Voters who care about the failed Education System, put together to send to both Sen. John McCain and Sen. Barack Obama? To make this idea of every student who doesn't have a computer, own a linux powered laptop computer so they can access the internet for homework research and to create their own multimedia reports using OpenOffice and other such programs??? There has to be a coupon debit-like card with $300 to $600 that can only be used via schools and/or online vendors for the parents to purchase low cost linux powered laptop computers? But it has to be able to run Windows XP Home Ediition as another choice besides Ubuntu, Fedora, openSUSE, Mandriva, or Debian.

Iphone & ubuntu 7.1?

Can I sync my iPhone with my Ubuntu PC. I use Amarok to manage my music collection.

Having done some research many of the suggested methods to sync the iPhone require "jailbreaking it" to get access to the file system. I don't want to mod the iPhone in any way.

Ubuntu 7.1 - impressions?

Gutsy Gibbon is out - any impressions? It seems like this is a much slicker version of Ubuntu. My concern is that while great, it is still not as robust as, say, Mac OS X. I'm curious to know how close it gets!

Any thoughts?
