Open Source Channel Alliance Gives Resellers All-in-One Access to Open Source Apps

While frugality isn't by any means the only reason a business should consider open source software, it would be foolish to think that the current economic situation isn't making it more attractive to companies. There is often, however, an imposing barrier standing in the way of all-out adoption. The mythical "learning curve" involved in moving to open source isn't half so steep or intimidating as that first step -- where do we go, what applications are best for us, and how do we put it all together and make it all work?

This week, Red Hat and IT services distribution provider, SYNNEX, announced the formation of the Open Source Channel Alliance. The Alliance's aim is to help value-added resellers and solutions providers deliver all the benefits of open source applications to their customers.

Thunderbird v/s Zimbra v/s Gmail (yes, I know its not Open Source!)?

I, unfortunately, like most of the workforce, have been on Outlook for longer than I can remember (actually there was a brief, blissful moment way back when I was using Lotus Notes!).

Just wanted to get your thoughts on the advantages of deploying Thunderbird v/s Zimbra for a small company (20-25 people). Google Apps is also an interesting (free) service that we are evaluating cause gmail comes bundled in there for free.

Thoughts/Suggestions?

Good hosting providers with root access

Hi - I need to set up a backup mail server. I would like to have a dedicated box in the cloud. I have looked at EC2 by Amazon, but that seems pricey for an always-on service. GoDaddy and 1and1 etc. don't really give you a lot of control, so I am not sure how good they would be. What services have you used nad how has it panned out? All I need is a backup mail server. I could run something as simple as sendmail or as advanced as Zimbra.

Will Yahoo buy OpenOffice next?

Now that it has mail and PIM collaboration done with Zimbra, do we see Yahoo buying OpenOffice next? Even with a beefier Mail client, Yahoo still lags Google in the apps space. While this move takes yahoo ahead of Hotmail, it still needs to catch up to Google on the apps sharing side. It will make a good addition to the 'Yahoo Business' platform, though.

Yahoo buys ZImbra - how will that impact users?

Does this mean that we can now access zimbra online via yahoo mail? Is this a play to move Yahoo mail into the enterprise, similar to google apps? How many users will they hope to snag as a consequence?

Zimbra or other mail server to pop mail from third parties

I'm looking to have my mailserver pop mail from 3rd party sites like gmail and then have a single point from where my clients can check all consolidated emails. The specific requirements are: 1) pop mail from several mail servers 2) make mail available to clients like thunderbird 3) allow my clients to respond directly, but set the appropriate 'reply-to' address depending on where the mail came from. I realize this is easier to do by just getting thunderbird to check mail from multiple servers, but was wondering if I can use this for my mail server to do.
