Guides for Navigating the Open Cloud

by Ostatic Staff - Dec. 26, 2012

The year 2012 marked the true arrival of credible open source cloud computing platforms, and the open source cloud is poised to be one of the biggest stories of 2013. Of course, OpenStack emerged as a heavily backed open platform, but it's far from the only one. We've covered CloudStack, Eucalyptus Systems and other platforms and providers all year long. In this post, you'll find our complete and updated collection of stories, interviews, resource guides and more on the topic of open source cloud computing.

In the open source cloud computing race, many companies are backing the OpenStack platform, which even has its own powerful foundation.  Earlier this year, Rackspace delivered its "fanatically supported," open source cloud platform powered by OpenStack, and Cisco, HP, and others have delivered their own OpenStack solutions. At OStatic, we think support will be the big differentiator between open cloud platform providers, and you can find a discussion of why here

Meanwhile, Citrix points out that its CloudStack platform is not to be taken lightly, and nobody can count Eucalyptus Systems out either.  According to a Citrix post:

"CloudStack continues to gain rapid adoption with large scale deployments around the world, both with major service provider and enterprise customers. While you might not realize it from reading the press releases, CloudStack is far and away the most widely deployed open source platform in the cloud. It’s not even a close race. While other platforms have lots of 'PR wins,' very few have been successful in real deployments."

As you can see from Citrix's post, there is fierce competition going on in the open cloud.

At OStatic, we've conducted an interview series with cloud computing platform managers, and makers of commercial cloud platforms, focused on the question, "What's in Your Stack?" The people we interviewed are, in many cases, cloud pioneers, and include founders of hot cloud-focused startup companies.
