Mint OEMs, Zenwalk's Return, and Knopper Interview

by Ostatic Staff - Dec. 06, 2013

What an interesting day we had in the Linux newsfeeds! Zenwalk is back after a 14 month hiatus. Petter Reinholdtsen has published an interview with the elusive Klaus Knopper. Linux Mint 16 OEMs are available. ROSA R2 was released, Mageia has put out another call for artwork, and Fedora 20 is delayed.

"Zenwalk 7.4 BETA is ready for testing"

Those were the words that broke the 14 month silence from Zenwalk founder and developer Jean-Philippe Guillemin. Also known as Hyperion, Guillemin said:

In this release you will find :

* LibreOffice 4.1.1
* Gimp 2.8.6
* XFCE 4.12GIT
* Thunderbird 24.1.0
* Firefox 25.0.1
* Kernel 3.10.20 with performance tweaks

Several applications of previous Zenwalks have been replaced : Mplayer is now the multimedia player (instead of Totem), Lxdm is the display manager (instead of GDM), Xfburn is the CD:DVD burner (instead of Brasero), Geeqie is now the image viewer.

Interview with Klaus Knopper

Petter Reinholdtsen, Debian Edu developer, today published a rare interview with Knoppix creator Klaus Knopper. Knoppix was a groundbreaking distribution and quite popular in its day. Updates are still released at least yearly. In today's interview, Knopper said he's now a "professor in information management at the university of applied sciences Kaiserslautern / Germany and freelance Open Source software developer and consultant." He continues by discussing his reasons for using Skolelinux / Debian Edu for schools among several other interesting topics.

Fedora 20 Final to slip by one week

At yesterday's Go/No-Go meeting of Fedora managers it was decided to "slip Fedora 20 Final release by one week due to unresolved blocker bugs." The new GA date is December 17. The next meeting is December 12, so cross your fingers.
