openSUSE 12.1 On its Way
The second of six openSUSE 12.1 developmental releases was announced today right on time by Jos Poortvliet. This 12.1 cycle will include the aforementioned six milestones releases as well as two release candidates. The final product is scheduled to be released to the public on November 11.
One of the biggest changes in 12.1 will be the replacement of sysV with systemd. This is a major transplant and every distro that has made the move experienced a plethora of problems. A couple even postponed the full integration due to usability issues. As Poortvliet said in the announcement, there have been a lot of objections to the move and the discussion is finally slowing on the openSUSE Factory mailing list. It certainly appears the bottom line is that systemd is officially in the works and will be in 12.1, so buckle up and help out. In fact, Poortvliet said, "the team welcomes help and bugreports!"
Some other tidbits shared by Poortvliet include these changes:
● Firefox 5
● Horde4 packages (php5-pear-horde)
● "The Board"
● rawstudio
● llvm/clang 3.0 snapshot
● many smaller updates to KDE and GNOME applications and desktops
● nspluginwrapper updated for a more stable Flash plugin on 64bit
Linux 2.6.39, Xorg 7.6, GCC 4.6, KDE 4.6.4, GNOME 2.32.1 & 3.0.2, and Xfce 4.8 are among the updates. Poortvliet added,
Over 100 new packages have been added, including extensions for Banshee, some small tools like DDS2tar and brainfuck interpreter, Cdecl (turns C/C++ gibberish into English), cint (small C/C++ interpreter) and a number of other devel and language tools.
