A Story From Life That Is Really Big English Essay

Tell a story from your life, describing an experience that either demonstrates your character or helped to shape it.
I have many memories of sitting in a car with my dad learning whatever my dad would teach me. Our discussions would range from what is the best ice cream flavor to how glass is made. In a particular car ride my dad told me something that would stick with me for the rest of my life. “I think therefore, I am,” a quote by the philosopher Rene Descartes. This quote confused me a lot at the time. My dad explained that Descartes attempted to find a way to prove that one actually exists. Basically, it is difficult to prove that you exist since you could be in a dream or illusion. However, Descartes proposed that by thinking and doubting yourself, in some form, you can confirm that you do exist. I have spent many nights pondering this quote and its application to my world. And then one day I had a revelation. According to Descartes's philosophy, I can confirm that somehow I exist as I am aware of the fact that I can think and function. But there is no way to confirm everyone around me really exists. This is because I am not anybody else so I can’t know for sure that they really think and function. I only came to this conclusion after noticing a pattern throughout my life. This pattern was a string of seemingly unrelated coincidences. Obscure words I learn in school suddenly show up in books I read or movies I watch. People who come across my mind seem to show up out of nowhere. Whenever I feel guilty after doing something, something bad tends to always happen. The amount of...
