‘Abortion is always wrong’
Abortion is the termination of a pregnancy. Some think it is murder while others have the opposite viewpoint. This Depends on the question of personhood.
Some Christians such as Roman-Catholics may agree with this statement as they think ensoulment occurs at conception. Therefore, if you kill the foetus in the middle of the pregnancy it would be considered as murder.
They believe this as in the Bible it says ‘Thou shalt not kill.’ This means life should be protected. Abortion does the opposite and kills an unborn child.
As a consequence of this teaching, Roman-Catholics may not have abortions and will usually protest against it.
This is a strong argument as people do not wish to kill people and if God has said not to, then we should obey Him.
Other Christians such as Church of England may agree with this statement as all human life is created in Gods image and so should be nurtured.
Others may disagree with this statement as it could be seen as the lesser of two evils.
Muslims may disagree with the statement because they believe ensoulment occurs 120 days after conception. They believe that the mother has more rights than the foetus before that time. The later an abortion occurs, the worse it is believed to be.
This is quite a strong argument as the mother should not go through with the pregnancy if it puts a strain on her.
On the other hand, many Muslims may agree with this statement as in the Qur’an, it says ‘If anyone kills a person, it is as if he kills all mankind.’ This suggests that if abortion takes place after the 120 days, it is considered murder.
It also is forbidden if the family claims they do not have enough money to support the family. They say, ‘Do not kill your children for fear of poverty – we shall provide for them and you.’ The family and the Muslim community have a responsibility to help the family if there are issues with money.
This is a strong argument as people should help other people in need.
The non-religious perspective would be that abortion is the lesser of two evils. An example of this would be if the mother got raped or will be under severe mental stress.
In conclusion, I think I would disagree with this statement as it is up to the mother. If the foetus’ quality of life will be bad, we should do the right thing and kill it before it suffers.
