Animal testing on cosmetics is arguably one of the most, if not the most controversial topics on animal testing. Although animal testing has been banned in some places it still does occur all over the world, and sadly is mandated in some parts of the world such as China. Usually there are several tests that are commonly performed on dogs, cats, monkeys, mice, rats, rabbits and guinea pigs. According to PETA there are several test performed on animals such as skin and eye irritation tests, which is when chemicals are rubbed onto the shaved skin or dripped into the eyes of restrained conscious rabbits without any sort pain relief. This is extremely painful for the rabbits to endure, often screaming in pain when the substances are applied and sometimes they sadly break their necks or backs trying to escape the restraints. Another method is repeated force-feeding studies that tend to last weeks or even months to look for any signs of general illness or specific health hazards (such as cancer or birth defects). They also perform "lethal dose" tests, in which animals are forced to swallow large amounts of a test chemical to determine the dose that causes death.
