Anti-Smoking Commercial
Ever since most of us were little kids, we were taught by our parents that smoking was bad for you and could cause serious health problems. I’m sure you would also like to think that it would be common sense to never pick up a cigarette and try to harm ourselves in any way. Don’t we all want to live long and healthy lives? So why would we risk that? Smokers know smoking is harmful to themselves, yet they continue to do it every single day. On top of that, they tell non smokers to never smoke because of the fact that it’s so harmful. So why is it so hard for them to quit if they know it’s so bad? I couldn’t tell you the answer to that question because I am not a smoker, but in this commercial, it made them think about what they were doing and pushed them to decide what was best for themselves.
The commercial starts out on a black screen with white words that say “Adults know that smoking is harmful, but don’t remind themselves of this fact.” It then continues onto the next screen which asks “How would they feel when a child smokes?” The video itself then starts out with a collage of edited videos of a little boy and little girl holding a cigarette and walking up to a random people smoking on the streets to ask them for a light. The kids then hear responses such as “I’m not giving it to you”, “Smoking is bad, you have to stop”, “Cigarettes contain insecticide”, and “You look old when you smoke.” Every adult filmed reminded the children that smoking is bad. A man told the little boy “If you smoke you die faster. Don’t you want to live and play?” Another man told the child “When you smoke you suffer from lung cancer, emphysema and strokes.” But the smokers are forgetting something themselves. The little girl then asks a woman “So why are you smoking?” and the woman seems taking aback. The two children then hand everyone they had talked to a brochure that reads “You worry about me. But why not yourself? Reminding yourself is the most effective warning to help you quit. Call 1600 hotline to quit smoking.” Almost every adult who received a brochure stopped to think and threw away their cigarette. No adult, however, threw away the brochure. There has since been an increase of about forty percent in phone inquiries by smokers who wanted to quit.
The purpose of this commercial is to inform the audience, smokers and nonsmokers, the effects smoking can have on a person on any occasion. It really opens up everyones minds and helps them realize that smoking is not only bad for children but it’s bad for everybody. This commercial speaks to smokers by informing them to quit smoking to better their health and lifestyle. At the same time, it’s telling nonsmokers to stay away from cigarettes, as they have been, so that they ...
