Women during this time were still heavily oppresed because it was before both World Wars so they hadnt gained respect or rights for contributing the war effort. Women still stuck to the ideas that women should care for the children and be housewifes dispite people trying to change it. The country was still isolated from the rest of the world and the economy was undeveloped.

This come from Jane Addams who was a reformer, social worker, protestor, and leader in women's suffrage. She was a person who belived that women should have far more rights than what they were given at the time.

The purpose of the article is for women to stand up for themselves and give up the housewife menatlity that they are so familiar with. Addams wants women to take an active role in society and give their own thoughts on how society works. She wants women to contribute their own ideas for bueatification throughout the city and society.
