Art, Design and Technology. Explain which art movements were predominantly influenced by this. How do these three areas have an effect on your chosen pathway?
Throughout generations, the evolution of art movements has always been influenced by radical ideas, technology at that time. Each movement started by an individual who wanted to create something new go against the trend of the times; this gave way for massive improvement and innovation. Each succeeding movement has gone against or tried to improve on the previous movements with new ideas and use the available resources at hand, creating a shift in the style of everything surrounding it. This is the case in the field of architecture. These conditions are highly noticeable in art movements such as Arts&Craft, Deconstruction and Digital art. This essay will give a brief of each of the movement on the basis of art, design and technology and try to relate to the field of architecture and give an insight of the importance of each of the movement in the development of architecture through the years.
I. Arts&Craft movement The Arts&Craft movement was one of the most influential movements of its time. WilliamMorrisbeing a key figure was a 19th-century artist who believed that the foundation of any economy would be to know the items worth regarding the value of the product to the buyer. This inspired him to start his own company Morris& Co. and started making handmade products such as furniture and wallpaper. The notion of importance given to handmade work leads to the belief that Williamhated machines. However, it is quite the opposite he wanted machines to be mastered to produce quality work. This timeless movement promoted craftsmanship and the idea that a person should be satisfied when he buys a product.
Architecture in art and craft was a small movement allowing to work with different mediums and set a more defined set of principles than a particular architecture style. This allowed the architects to focus on the materials that were available locally and had the potential to make the structure look radical and modern at the same time. Many of the structures built during the art and craft movement were locally sourced making it possible to have a connection with the location on a basic level. During this movement, architects began to focus on being a symbolic imagery. Another feature of this movement in architecture is that people began to focus on reviving traditional buildings and instead of focusing on just domestic buildings architects started to consider projects like churches, museums and commercial buildings. Figure 1 represents an example of one of many art and craft inspired structures introducing the art and craft architecture design language to urban London. This building stands as proof of the shift in focus of the buildings preferred to be focused on other than just domestic buildings.
