The Battle of the Alamo is the most celebrated military engagement in Texas history. The Alamo was originally called Misión San Antonio de Valero The battle included many combatants such as Tennessee congressman David Crockett, adventurer James Bowie and Mexican president Antonio Lopez de Santa Anna. Another one was William Barret Travis who achieved lasting distinction as commander at the Alamo. This battle was portrayed as the battle of patriotism sacrifice by Americans and by the Texans. The Alamo is considered to be the home of the missionaries and their Indian converts for nearly seventy years. In the month of December in 1835, Ben Milam led the people of Texas and Tejano volunteers against the Mexican Troops who were in the city. After the 5 consecutive days of fighting, the Texans and the Tejano volunteers forced the General Marin Perfecto de Cos and his soldiers to surrender. This caused the Texans to occupy Alamo.On February 23, 1836, General Antonio Lopez de Santa Annas army arrived outside San Antonio. For this reason, the Texans and the Tejanos prepared to defend Alamo. For 13 days, the defenders were holding Alamo from the Antonios soldiers. Furthermore, the commando of the Alamo, William B. Travis sent out messengers in the communities of Texas for help and backup. The messengers were successful in noticing the community, thus, a band of 32 volunteers from Gonzales arrived for backup. It is told in the legend that Colonel Travis drew a line on the ground telling his soldiers and the volunteers to step over the line if each one of them is willing to sacrifice their lives for Alamo. All of them stepped over except 1. The final siege was on March 6, 1836 as the Mexican army rampaged through the Alamo walls. Alamos army fired cannons to hold as much defense as possible; however, the Mexican army rushed inside and captured Alamo. By sunrise, Santa Annas army noticed his victory and the Alamos defeat.Although it is hugely debated concerning symbolism of the Battle of Alamo, most people remember Alamo as a heroic struggle for independence from the Mexicans.
