Bon Cop/bad Cop And The Ongoing Conflict Between French And English Canadians

1267 words - 6 pages

Analysis of the film Bon Cop/Bad Cop and the ongoing conflict between French and English Canadians When we talk about Canada, the first image that comes to my mind is the cold weather. It is the second largest nation in the world, and Canada has two official languages, which are English and French. English Canadians and French Canadians separately live in two parts of Canada. The border to isolate English and French Canadians is the border of the Province of Quebec. That also is one of the most important characteristics to identify Canadian from American, since in the article, "an argument which holds that we need the quaint, exotic presence of Quebec to keep us different from the United States" (pg. 97). The movie of "Bon Cop/Bad Cop" is trying to reveal to the audience by telling the story about that two cops from Ontario and Quebec solved a criminal case after they knew each other and resolved the conflicts between them. It seems to symbolize that English and French Canadians having different cultures, politics, and backgrounds, settle the conflicts and reunified as a nation. The following paragraphs demonstrate the diversification of Canada by reviewing the difference between English and French Canadian languages, characteristics, and also the two versions of history which causes Canada to become "decentralized, unstable and pluralistic" (pg. 109) First of all people who first time knows the existence of Quebec and the French as the official language of Canada really want to know how this could happen. To figure out this question, we should know the history of Canada in the very first place. As we know from the book, there was a famous and important battle between the English and French which is also called "The Conquest". After that battle, the English conquered the French colonists, and also French colonists were considered worthless by the French (pg. 93). Although English colonists won the war and "English-Canadian historians described it as a liberation and not a defeat at all", French colonists regarded this occupation as a humiliation (pg. 93). That is not hard to understand why English and French Canadians are prejudiced against each other for a long period of time. Even in the history textbook, English and French history versions "have differed on almost every important subject" (pg. 91). Most English Canadians think "the Conquest was a victory for French colonists because it rescued them from the despotic control of the French monarchy" (pg. 91). However, the Conquest seems like a rape and wound in the view of French Canadians. Facing English Canadians, French Canadians do not have any advantages regarding the smaller population, territory, and much weaker support from the mother country. But French Canadians had never stopped struggling "to survive the assimilationist intentions of the English majority" (pg. 105). That is also the reason why Canada is not a stabilized country in the past. The most obvious symbol to indicate t...
