C304 Task 2
1
A1 Response to Scenario
After reading the scenario, my first instinct was to say no and deny his request.
However, then I began to think deeper about the situation. From my standpoint Mr.
Newcomb deserves to have happen whatever will make him happy. Although one thing
in the scenario stands out to me. Mr. Newcomb has asked me to essentially lie for him
to his wife. Lying is something that I personally would not be able to do. I would inform
Mr. Newcomb that I would not be able to lie to his wife. I would explain to him that he
would have to facilitate the visit and that I would not stop his mistress from visiting.
A2 Application of Patient Principles
In my response to Mr. Newcomb, I applied the principle of beneficence through
not judging Mr. Newcombs request or codemening him as a bad person for making
such request. Also, I applied the principle of maleficence by not denying his request to
have his mistress visit. As a nurse, one of my goals is to do no harm to my patient. If I
denied him from seeing his mistress I feel as though it would inflict emotional harm to
Mr. Newcomb. In my refusal to lie to his wife, justice is displayed. I feel as though it
would not be fair to his wife to lie to her. Lastly, as a provider, I would want to help Mr.
Newcomb maintain his autonomy. In doing this I should continue to allow Mr. Newcomb
to make his own decisions. If one of his decisions is to have his mistress visit, I would
support it. Although, I support the decision I would not facilitate the meeting nor lie to
make it happen.
