Chen Shui Bian's False Goodwill But Real "taiwan Independence"

754 words - 4 pages

According to the news of Oct 12 from Macao Xinhuanet.com. Macao Daily published an editorial on Oct. 12, saying that the speech by Chen Shui Bian on Oct.10 has not only showed no goodwill for promoting peace talks across the Taiwan Straits but expressed further his idea for "Taiwan Independence", betraying his false feeling and play of tricks. The Macao Daily editorial entitled "Chen Shui Bian's False Goodwill but Real "Taiwan Independence" says, Chen Shui Bian expressed in his speech that the two sides of the Taiwan Straits may seek "on the basis of '92 Hong Kong Talks" for a program which is "acceptable though not perfect". Chen Shui Bian said, this is an "expression of his goodwill". But when going over the speech we come to discover the so-called "goodwill" is no more than a superficial whitewash. The editorial says, it's not difficult to tell the so-called "'92 talks" he mentioned is but a smokescreen. With regard to the "one China" common recognition reached at the "'92 talk ...view middle of the document...

The editorial holds, the speech of Chen Shui Bian betrayed his stand for "Taiwan Independence". He stressed repeatedly that "the Republic of China is Taiwan", "Taiwan is a sovereign country" and puts "the Republic of China and the People's Republic of China", "Taiwan and China" on an equal place. This has no difference with the so-called "one side one country", "one China one Taiwan", the conception of "Taiwan Independence". Though he did not breathe a word of "Taiwan Independence" yet the speech is soaked with the conception for "Taiwan Independence". Though he's verbally talking of peace yet actually he's for antagonism. The editorial says, Chen Shui Bian announced in his speech, to raise Taiwan's defence ability is the primary condition for keeping the existing peace in Taiwan Straits. This is for peddling his arms purchase and is contradictory and utterly inharmonious to the two-sides synchronized "arms control" as mentioned in his speech. In addition, he attacked viciously the Chinese mainland by saying that the mainland is a "terrifying shadow" and a "gloomy force", which is threatening the existing peace now in Taiwan Straits. With this he's trying to rouse a melancholy feeling among the people in Taiwan, instigating the antagonistic feelings of the people across the Straits. However, those who are really threatening the peace across the Taiwan Straits are the elements advocating "Taiwan Independence". By relying on large arms procurement they are "attempting for Taiwan independence with military forces" and they even threaten to hit Shanghai with guided missiles. These are the provocative expressions threatening the peace. So long as Chen Shui Bian sticks to his "Taiwan Independence" there can be no peace to be talked of.The editorial expressed, if Chen Shui Bian really has a goodwill he should at least and first of all recognize the principle of "one China", recognize that Taiwan is an inseparable part of China. Only by doing so can the two sides of the Taiwan Straits be sitting down for talks, really marching towards peace and joining hands for cooperation so as to bring about a new opportunity for peaceful development across the straits.
