Civil Engineering Civil engineering is a great career, with many appealing aspects. First of all, civil engineering is a very broad career. It has a very wide range of job possibilities. This is great because I am not exactly sure which field I want to go into. Also, civil engineering is a field that comes with a great number of employment opportunities. It is great knowing that when I get my degree, it will be easy to find a good job. And finally, civil engineers receive fairly high salaries.Civil engineers do a number of jobs. Heery is a private firm that deals with the transportation industry, mainly trains (Mass). I would not mind designing train bridges for a company like Heery.During my research, I found out that the salaries of civil engineers are fairly high. The average starting salary for a civil engineer with a bachelor's degree was $36,100. The average annual income of all civil engineers was $53,450 in 1998, but the average earnings were much higher in the three engineering employers that employed the most engineers. Civil engineers working for the federal government earned the highest average wage. The federal government paid their civil engineers an average of $64,000 a year. Workers in the heavy constriction industry earned an average of $61,300, and workers within local governments earned an average of $52,100 (Civil). As you can see, the salaries for civil engineers are very rewarding.As you can see, civil engineering has almost endless opportunities. There are many different types of jobs, many different places to find jobs, and the salaries are great for those jobs. I want to become a civil engineer not only because of the great opportunities, but also because of my interests in designing and building things.
