Besides having clearly expressed goals the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologist have a clearly expressed vision statement:Obstetrics and gynecology is a discipline dedicated to the broad, integrated medical andsurgical care of women's health throughout their lifespan. The combined discipline ofobstetrics and gynecology requires extensive study and understanding of reproductivephysiologic, social, cultural, environmental, and genetic factors that influence diseasein women. This study and understanding of the reproductive physiology of women givesobstetricians and gynecologist a unique perspective in addressing gender-specific healthcare issues.Primary and preventive counseling and education are essential and integral parts of thePractice of an obstetrician-gynecologist as they advance the individual and community-based health of women of all ages.Obstetricians and gynecologist may choose a wide or more focused scope of practice fromprimary ambulatory health to concentration in a particular area of specialization. The five major ethical foundations that members of the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists use to guide them when making decisions are the patient-physician relationship, physician conduct and practice, avoiding conflicts on interest, professional relations, and societal responsibility.The Patient-Physician RelationshipThe patient must not be discriminated against by the physician because of race, religion, or natural origin. "The welfare of the patient is central to all considerations in the patient-physician relationship. Included in this relationship is the obligation of physicians to respect the rights of patients, colleagues, and other health professions" (The American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists, 2005, p1., para. 2).Physician Conduct and PracticeThe physician must be completely honest with the patients and colleagues. Trust is very important between the physician and patients.
