My area is considered the 9th congressional district. It is represented by Al Green. Our Texas senators are Ted Cruz and John Cornyn.
Al Green is the representative for Texas’s 9th congressional district. This district includes most of southwestern Houston and some of Missouri City. He is 71 years old and African American. He is not married. He’s apart of the Democratic Party and practices the Baptist religion. He has served for 13 years. He attended Florida A&M University, Howard University, and the Tuskegee Institute. He also attended Thurgood Marshall School of Law, where he earned his Juris Doctor degree in 1973. After graduating from law school, He co-founded and co-managed the law firm of Green, Wilson, Dewberry, and Fitch. In 1977, he was appointed Justice of the Peace in Harris County, Texas, where he served for 26 years before retiring in 2004. While in Congress, Green has focused on issues like those he fought for while with the NAACP. Fair housing and hiring practices for the poor and minorities are some of his greatest concerns. Green has strong liberal views on social issues. He is pro-choice, and votes accordingly. He’s received many awards including the Texas Association of REALTORS Legacy Award, 2011, the AFL-CIO MLK Drum Major Award for Service, 2007, Ebony Magazine’s 100 Most Influential Black People, 2006, as well as others. He’s also been honored by the city of Houston with a day named in his honor--“Al Green Day.” I agree with Al Green’s views on gun control.
John Cornyn is the senior United States Senator for Texas. He is white and 66 years old. He is married to Sandy Cornyn and has 2 daughters. He’s apart of Repuclican party and is religiously affiliated with the Restorationists (Churches of Christ). Cornyn has served as senator for 16 years. He graduated from Trinity University in 1973, where he majored in journalism and earned a J.D. from St. Mary's University School of Law in 1977 and an LL.M. from the University of Virginia School of Law in 1995. In 1984, Cornyn ran for, and won, an open state district judge seat in Bexar County. After serving as a state district judge for six years, He was elected to the Texas Supreme Court in 1990 and reelected in 1996. After resigning in 1977 from the Texas Supreme Court, Cornyn ran for Attorney General of Texas. He was the first Republican to win that office since Reconstruction. In 2004, Cornyn co-founded and became the co-chairman of the U.S. Senate India Caucus. He’s very conservative, pro-life, and believes in a strong military. Cornyn has received various awards including the 2005 Border Texan of the Year Award, the National Child Support Enforcement Association's Children's Champion Award, the American Farm Bureau Federation's Friend of Farm Bureau Award and many others.
Ted Cruz is an attorney serving as the junior United States Senator from Texas. He is hispanic and 47 years old. He is married to Heidi Cruz and has 2 daughters. He’s a republican and is apart of the southern baptist religion. Cruz has served as senator for 5 years. Cruz graduated from Princeton University in 1992 with a Bachelor of Arts in Public Policy and attended Harvard Law School, graduating magna cum laude in 1995 with a Juris Doctor degree. He has very conservative views. In the U.S. Senate, Cruz has led the fight to repeal Obamacare, to secure the border, defend life, marriage, the First Amendment, the Second Amendment, and the entire Bill of Rights. Ted Cruz was named "2013 Man of the Year" by conservative publications and “2013 Conservative of the Year" by Townhall.com. I don’t agree with many of Ted Cruz’s views and policies. He’s very conservative and supports things I don’t. Cruz is pro-life, against Obamacare, same-sex marriage and the legalization of marijuana. I don’t care for his conservative way of thinking, therefore I would give him a 4. His views disagree with alot of my views. He’s “anti-abortion’ and I strongly believe that choice belongs to the woman.
