Canadian Pioneers Personal Response Essay
Discrimination is a real and distressing problem that continues to exist in modern day society. We need to stop judging people from the way they look, the colour of their skin, the shape of their body and instead, we should treat all equally and fairly so that everyone could live their life the way they want to. The essay “Canadian Pioneers” by Janine Beach showed how racism is still a serious ongoing issue and how many people are still judged daily because of the colour of their skin. While reading this essay, I felt frustration, that many people are stereotypical and sadness as it made me realize truly what the society is made up of.
Everyday, its frustrating to see many people that are being judged because of the colour of there skin, the way they look and this needs to stop before this issue gets uncontrollable. While reading this essay, I felt frustrated and angry because of how Beach and many others were discriminated and how they were judged several times due to the fact that they had a different skin colour which was black, and she was treated differently. Beach was also harassed many times in her day to day life and she would also be mistreated. In the essay, she says that “she was mistaken for having the name “black” many times”(1) and this shows how many people around her maltreated her. Furthermore, this makes me angry because Beach shouldn’t be going through this but instead, they all should be treated equally and fairly without even knowing the colour of their skin because that's how everyone deserves to be treated on a day to day basis. In the essay, she also says that “my mother, a school principal, has also been mistaken for the schools cleaning lady”(1) and this shows how many people judge her because of her skin colour. This essay made me frustrated because many people all across the world are going through this everyday and how many more times does this issue need to occur before there is a change. Therefore, I feel that this issue isn’t being resolved but instead, I feel it may be getting worse.
Canada being one of the most multicultural nations in the world still see’s cases of cultural stereotyping in our society. After reading this essay, I felt as if many people are stereotypical to Beach in the essay and they judge a person thinking they already know who the person is before even meeting them. Beach was discriminated several times due to the colour of her skin and mistreated along with her friends. In the essay, she says “my male friend has grown accustomed to the frighte...
