"Ensomme sjerner" er ei bok skrive av Arne Garvang, og handlar om ein gut som heiter John Brattland. Handlinga i boka går over ein periode på ca. to år, og i denne perioden er John 15 og 16 år gamal. Han bur på Kaldbakken på Grorud i Oslo, saman med hans far, hans mor og hans lillesyster Anne på ni år. Anne fikk sjukdommen poliomyelitt som lita, og John passar difor godt på henne.I bryjinga av "Ensomme stjerner" går John Brattland sitt siste år på ungdomsskule, og han er gitarist i eit band som heiter "Five blue stars". John og venane hans kalla ein restaurant på Grorud for "Kakkerlakken", og dette gav ideen til bandets namn. Bandet drar etter kvart på tunré til nokon byer rundt om i Noreg, men dette blir ikkje noko vellykka.Etter sommarferien, byrjar John på ny skule. John er mykje ihop med det nye bandet sitt, men desse menneska påverkar han i negativ retning. John drikk mykje meir øl og sprit enn det han gjorde tidlegare, han byrjar å røykje, og han har sex utan prevensjon med jentar han ikkje har noko særleg forhold til. I staden for å dra på hytta på Eidsvoll med familien hans i helgane, drar han på festar og stel sprit fra foreldra hans. Nokon ganger har han også fest heime hos seg sjølv.John og venane hans er ille ute når dei ei natt bryt seg inn på restauranten dei kallar "Kakkelakken", og raserer heile stedet. Fyrst blir dei ikkje tatt for innbrotet, men etter kvart finn politiet ut kven det er som har gjort brotsverket. Foreldra til John får vete om dette, og blir vonbroten da dei har oppdrege John til å ikkje lyge, og ikkje komme i trøbbel.I slutten av boka "Ensomme stjerner" døyr både bestefaren til John og eit medlem i bandet til John. John skjønar da at han ikkje må komme i meir trøbbel. Han får seg endeleg ein ordentleg kjæraste, og der sluttar boka om John Brattland.
