Experiences with Decision Making Models
Decision making models can be used for a number of different situations. The model I have selected for this paper will focus on my experience with the managerial decision making model outlined in the online e-book, Management: The New Competitive Landscape (Bateman & Snell, 2003) and how it was used to for the licensing and implementation of an HRMS/Payroll system.
The ideal decision-making process involves six stages; Identifying and diagnosing the probl ...view middle of the document...
The identified problem was the lack of control the company had over our payroll processes with our current vendor. Finding alternative solutions were created by utilizing my HR and Payroll managers to research solutions that were available. The team generated names of potential products, from the collaborative information gathering I was able to perform competitive benchmarking to guide us in determining the value each vendor had to offer. When the time came to evaluate each product, the selected vendors were contacted for a demonstration of the benefits and drawbacks of each.
Two vendors were selected for further review, both offering the functionality that were capable of optimizing our business processes and work-flow. After several meetings, one was selected based on licensing cost. We decided to setup a test environment to implement the software using valid payroll data for a few weeks. I was able to use the incremental decision making model to correct any issues during the testing phase. We finally ran a live payroll and the system is running smoothly, mostly in part due to the incremental decision making during the test phase in our test playground.
