The logic of Stupid Poor People
Primary Argument: The importance of having items can represents status.
Support Argument:
I. Ms. Cottom talks about how everyone wants to belong and how they would go out of their way to fit in. “Status Symbol; silk shells, designer shoes, luxury handbags- become keys to unlock this gate.” (pg. 1011). Wearing designer clothes or dressing nice can make a great first impression.
II. Ms. Cottom talks about, “To be acceptable is about gaining access to a limited set of rewards granted up group membership”. (Pg. 1014). By presenting yourself correctly you could be brought up in status. Also, by how you present yourself can open new opportunities for yourself.
III. People really put a toll to themselves about how others see them. Ms. Cottom talks about this and how you live your life can determine how you represent your status. “Belonging to one group at the right time can mean the difference between unemployment and employment, a good job to a bad job, housing or a shelter, and so on”. (Pg.1013). Belonging to a group of higher status will make your appearance seem greater.
