Essay On Why Insurance Companies Should Cover The Meningitis Vaccine

750 words - 3 pages

Meningitis usually starts out as a flu-like illness or infection. That is why people are usually confused by the initial symptoms and ignore it. However, meningitis can turn out to be fatal if it is not treated correctly or within a good time. This disease can cause inflammation of the brain and spinal cord and infection through the body. It affects the meninges which are the membranes that cover the spinal cord and the brain. Meningitis is a disease that can be fatal and be very dangerous if not treated or if people don’t get vaccinated. That is the reason that all insurance companies should cover the meningitis vaccine.
College students are the ones who are obligated to have the meningitis vaccine before starting school. That is due to the fact that they are some of the people with a high risk of being exposed to meningitis. College students usually share things like water bottles, cups, lipstick, and things of that style. Not only that but also the fact that they all live very close to each other, and even share community bathrooms. That is why all college students that are going to attend a school in Texas are required to show proof that they have been given the meningitis vaccine. This is where money starts to become very valuable for families and students. Some families have many kids which make it hard to stay stable economically, especially if you have someone attending college (which also has to be paid for). Therefore, it would be a very big advantage for the student and parent to have the vaccine available for free, or for their insurance company to cover for it. Those 120 dollars that would be used for the vaccine could be used towards books for classes.
Streptococcus Pneumoniae, or pneumococcus is the most common cause of bacterial meningitis on infants. Some of the pneumococcus may cause the following symptoms in young children and adults: stiff neck, fever, headache, sensitivity to bright light, and confusion in adults only.
Therefore, if the meningitis vaccine were to be free or be covered by insurance companies, then everyone would get it. At least that would be the smart thing to do since it can potentially kill you. So, if many more people were able to get vaccinated for this then the number of casualties would decrease significantly. Those families t...
