Even though they are not legally recognized, homosexual couples have always existed in every society. The debate is more and more vivid because there are no common points between opponents and proponents.Opponents claim that revising the traditional definition of marriage as between a man and a woman will further weaken the fore mentioned institution and that legalizing gay marriage is a slippery slope that may end in polygamous and other anti-nature marriages. They also argue that gay marriage is unsuitable with the beliefs, sacred texts, and traditions of most of the religious groups and that marriage should not be extended to same-sex couples because they cannot reproduce. Finally, gay marriage may lead to more children being raised in a non-optimum environment because they need both a mother and a father.On the other hand, proponents claim that same-sex couples should have access to the same benefits and public recognition which heterosexual couples do have and that prohibiting gay marriage is a discrimination.
