GCSE R.E ISLAM SHIA MUSLIMS VS SUNNI MUSLIMS DIFFERENCES AND SIMULARITITES - SHIA MUSLIMS VS SUNNI - Essay

518 words - 3 pages

There are no real differences between Sunni and Shi’a Muslims (15 Marker)
To begin one main difference between Sunni and Shi’a Muslims is about who should be the leader of Islam. Sunni’s believe that after Muhammad’s death the next leader should be elected. However, Shi’a Muslims believe that Muhammad’s descendants should be the next leader of Islam. Shi’a Muslims believe that an angel visited Fatima and told her that Ali(Muhammad’s son-in-law) was to bet the next leader of Islam. This therefore shows there are clear differences between Sunni and Shi’a Muslims.
Some Muslims would agree with this statement as both Sunni and Shi’a Muslims perform Zakat, the act of giving 2.5% of their income to charity. The Qur’an mentions zakat when it states, “and establish prayer and give Zakat”. Therefore, this influences both Sunni and Shi’a Muslims as the Qur’an is stating they should “give zakat” therefore as the Qur’an is divine and from Allah both Sunni and Shi’a Muslims perform zakat. This therefore shows us that there is no difference between Sunni and Shi’a Muslims in terms of zakat.
However, some Muslims would argue that there are fundamental differences between Sunni and Shi’a Muslims for example salah, the practice of prayer. With over 700 verses about salah in the Qur’an it is viewed to be one of the most important Islam practices. Sunni Muslims believe that salat should be performed five times a day this is because in the Qur’an it says, “Allah reduced the number of salats by five, until th...
