Generation Gap
Time always runs and changes the generations, this is one of the biggest truths of life and no one can deny it. Every generation gives something new to the world. As a new baby gradually develops with the flow of time, so does the older generation into a new generation. Children born in the time of 50s or 60s are now the old generation for the children and youngsters who are born in 80s and till now. Baby boomers are used to describe individuals born between 1946 and 1964. Notable features come to thought when the era of our parents and ours are laid on the table for justification. As far as I concern, I assert my generation is different from either my parents` generation or my grandparents` generation in various aspects. The change from the generation of my parents to mine has a significant impact on the new generation.
Education is a principal aspect that cannot be overlooked. I have lived 16 years of my life in Pakistan with my parents before coming to United States. My parents both grew up in bigger families of total 9 household members each, with only one bread earner. Teaching during the era of my parents was mostly done using the traditional lecture boards. An example is the chalkboard and chalk. My father as a student, at that time; had limited access to textbooks and had to make notes in class to aid his learning. His research works were library based. My father had limited or nearly no access to technology. Since my parents grew up in poor situations, they could not afford computers at their home. There used to be only one computer center in whole community and one has to wait in lines for hours to wait for their turn to be able to use it. My dad was always interested in exploring new things. He spent most of his time in old libraries. Old age made beneficial use of the library for both research works and learning unlike new generation. Due to load shading of electric power, my parents often used lamps and candles as a source of light to study.
However, in the present age, smart boards are used in teaching. This speeds the teaching process. The New generation also have access to unprecedented internet for researches. For example, students use the internet for project works and researches. Development of the database system has also enhanced our learning processes. This helps them in their learning assignments also. They have reformed access to textbooks online known as the electronic books. Since new generation are technologically oriented, and find it best studying online. The distant learning is in effect in my generation. A good example for this is my cousin, who is working a full-time job in Fairfax as a psychiatrist and also attending college is taking a distant learning course. The development of skills is acquired through their online networking abilities. Technological advances have driven their abilities to multi-task.
