Introduction
McDonough Gymnasium is a multi-purpose arena on the campus of Georgetown University in Washington, D.C.. McDonough Arena is a multipurpose building that accommodates many different large scale events. The building is named for Rev. Vincent J. McDonough, S.J., Georgetown's athletic director from 1916 to 1928.The McDonough Gymnasium opened in 1952 and is home to the women's basketball and volleyball teams. The men's basketball team practices and plays a limited number of games at McDonough Gymnasium. McDonough provides seating for 2,500 fans for basketball, and serves as a frequent campus site for university special events and select community events. However, the men’s basketball team plays at Capital One Arena. The Capital One Arena has been the men’s basketball home since 1997 and the arena seats a capacity of 20,600 fans. However, the Capital One Arena is fifteen minutes off campus, but can be longer due to traffic. In addition, there are limited parking in the Capital One Arena so people use other transportation such as the metro. The Hoyas share their home with the Washington Wizards (NBA), Washington Capitals (NHL), Washington Mystics (WNBA), plus concerts, family shows and sporting events. A fun fact about The Capital One Arena is they hosted the 2003 NBA All-Star weekend.

Georgetown men’s basketball attendance average is 8,479, but the McDonough can only hold 2,500 people. After the renovation, both teams will be able to play at the same gymnasium resulting happy fans. Along with happy fans, they will be in a better environment to be comfortable and cheer loudly. Also, students who attend Georgetown will have easier access to watch live basketball and volleyball games. Another purpose of the renovation is fans will be able to experience double headers. This will benefit women’s basketball attendance because men’s basketball bring in a lot of fans, so therefore, will come early to watch the women team play. Not only will it benefit sports, but other large scale events. Since the McDonough Arena is a multipurpose arena, concerts and other events will be held there.
