An image painted in the reader's mind that repeats in the book House on Mango Street is that waiting and having hope won't always help you achieve your goals. Esperanza has been waiting because she wants a new life. Minerva has been waiting to go back to Puerto Rico. Waiting is an important motif because the story is built off it. Waiting for something to change in our life will help us achieve our goals most of the time.

Esperanza has always hoped of living a better life. One where people treat her with respect. Esperanza admits on page 4, that she always dreamed of having a white house. With trees and a big yard. Esperanza wants to be new and shiny, with the wind under her skirt just like Lois Esperanza's been waiting for a new friend, someone just like sally.
