I hope the Redskins Win Alex Osmanski Saint Joseph's College I Hope the Redskins Win In Tim Giago's "I hope the Redskins lose.", I disagree with the fact that he believes that using Indians as mascots is "offensive". Giago, only see's the negative in having Indians as mascots, he has some hypocritical aspects within his writing, but, he does make some very persuasive arguments as of why the use of Indian mascots is offensive. This is definitely a personal matter for American Indians nation-wide and even possibly world-wide. I completely understand how Giago sees this as a problem but, sports organizations are definitely not being racists or demeaning to who the American Indians truly are.
Within the piece of writing by Giago, he only see's the negatives in having Indians as mascots. One example of this is, "As an Oglala Lakota (Sioux), born and raised on the Pine Ridge Reservation of South Dakota, I find it very hard to understand why non-Indians find it hard to understand why we consider it insulting to be treated as mascots." (Giago, 2017, 2) As a non-Indian, I am confused as of why Indians find this matter so offensive. It is nothing personal against Indians. Most people perceive Indian mascots as menacing and intimidating. Discrimination is not intended with having Indians as mascots. In the end it is about needing a mascot that gives off a fierce or ruthless vibe. When Giago talks about how he replaced "Redskins" with other races skin colors, he made the statement, "Try it and you will see how demeaning, degrading, and insulting it is to the people of different colored skins." (Giago, 2017, 4) I researched a video of a Redskins game and then followed Giago's instructions of replacing "Redskins" with "Whiteskins", since I am a white person. I wanted to see if the use of the word "Whiteskins" would upset or offend me. When I was doing this, I did not find it offensive at all. I concluded that it did not bother me in the slightest. I just watched it as a normal game and called the "Redskins" the "Whiteskins". Also, I did not feel demeaned or insulted in anyway. The beneficial sides to having American-Indians as mascots is that they are viewed as mighty and powerful. I do not get what is so offensive about that. Giago and American-Indians all over need to stop taking this as a personal matter because it is not as horrible as Giago makes it seem.
Within Giago's writing he is all about equality for Indians and everyone else. Well, in some ways he has made a hypocritical stand point. Giago wants to get rid of the idea and concept of having Indians as mascots. But, then he wants teams to replace it with a different races skin color. "He will change the name of his team to the "Palefaces," after his own race and that of one of his favorite singers, Madonna. The team song will be changed from "Hail to the Redskins" to "Like a Virgin." What an honor it will be for the wh...
