In our current society, physical beauty and conformity to that normative ideal , excludes all humans that do not meet the ideal. Everyone wants to fit in. We see this evidenced in the high amount of cosmetic surgery being performed among the average person. Cosmetic surgery used to be only for the rich and famous, now it is mainstream. In the video “Intersexion” we learned that there are many people that do not meet those societal ideals. We see a range of emotions from the people featured. They have figured out how to live with their differences and the challenges that come with them.
The producers of this film set out to demystify intersex, looking beyond the shame and secrecy that defines many intersex births. Interviewing intersex people around the world, the film explores how they navigate their way through childhood, adolescence, relationships and adulthood, when they don’t fit the binary model of a solely male and female world.
In this film we meet a wonderful mix of people, all born within the era where their parents were pressured to choose a gender and stick to it, no matter what the consequences. Their stories range from heartbreaking to life affirming and always focus on the importance of full disclosure and unconditional love.
