NOUNS:
Neuter Nouns
· Plural nominative and accusative always end in -a
· Only in 2nd, 3rd, and 4th declension
· The singular genitive form is what never changes in a declension, no matter the gender of the noun
Characteristics of Each Declension
1st Declension
- Nom, Gen, Dat, Acc, Abl, Voc
- Most nouns in are feminine
- Few masculine
2nd Declension
- Nom, Gen, Dat, Acc, Abl, Voc
- Masculine and neuter nouns
- (exceptions): -e replaces -us and -ī replaces -ius (“Mi Quinte” and “Mi Caecili)
3rd Declension
- Nom, Gen, Dat, Acc, Abl, Voc
- Feminine, masculine, and neuter
- Know the forms for the -i stem nouns
4th Declension
- Nom, Gen, Dat, Acc, Abl, Voc
- Neuter nouns (about 4/5 of the sing. form are the same, but that means if used in a sentence, context is important when determining the case)
5th Declension
- Nom, Gen, Dat, Acc, Abl, Voc
- Most are feminine
- Some masculine
