During the time when Hanner migrated to the Americas, most immigrants who migrated could find work and purchase land if they wanted to. Everything was affordable and available; he could also afford to buy anything he might need to live a comfortable life. He implies that in Pennsylvania, it's a more comfortable and less poor life.
