Two years after the infamous riots in Los Angeles took place, the Newark Riots of 1967 took place in Newark, New Jersey. It lasted five days, from July 12 through July 17. The riots were definitely anticipated, as there was tension due to the lack of employment for African Americans. African Americans had inadequate housing, police exclusion, and police brutality as a result of the government. The collective memory of this event has a direct correlation to the development of equality today.
Today, media has a significant impact on our culture and on the world at large. Our society today values social media, cell phones, computers, and various other means of media. As society continually changes, media is changing drastically as well. The three most important basics and functions of mass media include providing news and information, entertainment, and education. Media also educates us on the realities of what is going on around us. It can even educate us on basic rights and how we are supposed to go about using them. We have the ability to learn through the Internet, television, and radio. Children even use these means of media to educate themselves in new and fun ways. Despite the sometimes inaccurate information, it is incredible to see how drastically media has changed over time. Our society as a whole is reliant on the media's swift and efficient ways of generating news in an easily accessible manner.
