The Battle of Chancellorsville was fought in the country of Spotsylvania, Virginia during the American Civil War in the spring of 1863. The battle was fought by the Army of the Potomac, led by Major General “Fighting” Joe Hooker against the Confederate Army led by General Robert E. Lee. In December of 1862, the Army of the Potomac under the command of Major General Ambrose E. Burnside, suffered a stunning defeat at the hands of the Confederate Army led by General Robert E. Lee at Fredericksburg. By the time MG Hooker took command of the Army of the Potomac, morale was at an all-time low due to previously fought and lost campaigns such as the Second Manassas and most recently the loss at Fredericksburg. Hooker inherited an Army that was essentially not an effective fighting force. Nonetheless, Hooker sought to build espirit de corps and managed to do so within a few short weeks of taking command. He improved the quality of rations, living conditions, medical care, and granted furloughs very liberally.
