“Motive for Metaphor” Questions
1. Identify and explain the thesis.
How literature integrates itself into society and why it is valuable to the socialization of humans. Throughout the essay, Frye explains through literary devices how literature is the essential foundation humans need for learning. People cannot build on their knowledge if they don’t have a basic premise of literature.
2. Identify and explain the audience.
I think the audience is directed towards whoever is reading the work, but on a broader scale probably people who believe English is a useless subject. The essay brings light to the subject and how it is useful and can be helpful. Because it is a very persuasive piece of work explaining how literature is important. Therefore, I think its best fit audience would be illiterate people.
3. What is the relationship between English as mother tongue and English as literature?
English as a mother tongue means that essentially, all languages derived from English and that for you to learn any other subject, you must have a basic understanding of English. For example: you can’t study Biology if you cannot read the information being presented to you. English as literature, is essentially what I Just explained. To understand other things in life, you must have a foundation of English and be literate.
4. What does Frye say is the difference between art & science? How do they come together?
