Geertz says what makes man different is culture. From the scientific perspective, it is precisely this givenness which disappears. Deliberate doubt and systematic inquiry, the suspension of the pragmatic motive in favor of disinterested observation, and the attempt to analyze the world in terms of formal concepts whose relationship to the informal conceptions of common sense become increasingly problematic - there are the hallmarks of the attempt to grasp the world scientifically Geertz Liberal Project: the essential vocation of interpretive anthropology is not to answer our deepest questions but to make available to us answers that others, guarding other sheep in other valleys, have given, and thus include them in the consultable record of what man has said.

Reductionist Interpretations: against reductionist or totalizing interpretations (like Marxism and Freudianism). Thus in his work on ideology, Geertz argues against simplistic notions of culture, which see it only as a symptom or a result. Culture is Public: Geertz's most radical theoretical move was to argue that culture is not something locked inside people's heads but rather embodied in public symbols, symbols through which the members of society communicate their worldview, value orientations, ethos, and all the rest.
Culture as an ethos: Geertz is more interested in the ethos side of culture than worldview. Interested in what symbols say about the sense of self-social relations and of the distinctive flavor of social relations within a given culture. The other major contribution of the Geertzian framework was the insistence on studying culture from the actor's point of view. This does not imply that we must get into people's heads. What it means is that culture is a product of social beings trying to make sense of the world in which they find themselves.
