Although I have not voted in any presidential elections, I have always considered myself to be a Democrat, but that is because I assumed the only running parties were Republican and Democrat. Growing up, my household was Democratic, and instead of getting my own information about how candidates felt on certain situations, such as immigration and drug-related crimes, until one year, my father decided to vote Republican. When my mother questioned my father on why he had voted for the other candidate, I didn't know there were so many different issues to consider when voting. I grew up following my parent's lead on politics. My parents never told me why they had always voted Democratic, but in school, I got the impression that the Democratic party was favored more by minorities because of the government benefits such as Welfare and other help for people in poverty. In this semester of Government, I have learned more details about what each party represents, and I now consider myself to be a supporter of the Green Party.
I am not a very social person but a lot of the people that I associate with either at work or at church and a couple of my friends that I do have to agree with a lot of the political issues that I stand by, such as legalizing the use of marijuana for medical purposes and immigration policies.
I do like to hear other people's opinions on politics, not everyone agrees on the same thing, but I think that it is important to have discussions as long as everyone is able to keep an open mind on what is being said.
