After reading the Obesity Prevention article: “Public Health Messages: Why Are They Ineffective and What Can Be Done,” I realized there are so many different ways to go about health campaigns. Yes, obesity is an issue, especially in the United States but obesity is not simply a result from overeating, there are genetic, structural, psychological, and other factors at play. This is why obesity is such a complex issue. Of course, the ideal situation would be to promote preventative methods about obesity, so the rates would go down, but many communication strategies cannot be used alone, they must include different approaches. The reasons for these different approaches are because of the audiences spanning over generations and cultures and people groups that are diverse in nature. For example, one strategy of communication about obesity can come from new media. New media can be described as “web-based programs” to reach the people about public health messages. New media however is more focused to the younger generation. Most millennials and younger generations have social media such as facebook, twitter, Instagram, pinterest, and snapchat. These may seem like fun ways to post online, but these can also be direct channels for messages about health and obesity to be spread.
