REAGAN ARTICLE REFLECTION PAPER ​ 2
The different Reagan articles discussed the Reagan Administration’s push to close the
state hospitals across the U.S. in the 1980’s. This decision turned into a lot of issues dealing with
mental health community. There were many issues such as the Reagan cut funds for mental
health services which left people with mental illnesses in the dark. Mental health patients were
homeless and left on the street to suffer and die. This issue turned into another when mental
health patients started big use of hard drugs which led to huge behavior outbursts and crime in
the U.S. Which also lead to another issue to mentally ill patients not getting the proper help they
needed and these different outbursts out of reaction to the drugs caused those people to be put in
jail due to certain actions.
Many people thought these people were dangerous and caused crime when in reality they
were mentally ill and without medication or treatment it caused certain outbursts. Everyone also
knows that a mentally ill person in jail is not help because they are not getting the proper help
and care they need. These people had nowhere to go, nowhere to turn to due to all these
institutions shutting down and that was the biggest mistake that could've been made due to the
fact that mentally ill patients need proper care, rescourse, and genuine help. It was obvious at
that time none of these things happened.
