In a Biology Discourse Community there are six different characteristics to consider in order to generate questions about the discourse community itself: common goals, communication, what ideas are shared amongst each other, genres, language, and key figures in the field.
1. To begin, in a biology discourse community, there are several common public goals that
individuals involved in this discourse community want to convey. Biologist want to maintain a healthy environment. Biologists research within this discourse community to provide knowledge in the prevention of diseases and understand the anatomical structure of the human body. This public goal is to help provide knowledge to others outside of this particular discourse community to keep the people informed and cautious of certain outgoing viruses and diseases. Biologists want to improve the wellbeing of man by researching and studying the human body, in order to know how to properly treat and care for a person or patient.
2. Biologists also need a way to communicate and share ideas. Without this biologists would not
be able to have any sort of discussion or movement of innovations pertaining to this discourse community. Communications between these clinical biologists is highly important to advancements in medicine and technology, and general patient care. Communication needs to be concise, clear, and contain no ambiguity. A nurse and a doctor need to be able to communicate in Cobb 2 order to properly treat and care for another wellbeing. Documents and patient charts of the patient's history and care is also critically important within this discourse community when moving patient care between each medical facility. These forms filled out gives medical staff the ability to communicate chief complaint, visual signs/symptoms, or daily habits without having to ask the patient.
3. In a biology discourse community many books and journals are published in order to exchange
knowledge. As biologists continue to do their work of research and performing experiments and methods, all is published in a journal or book for other facilities within this discourse community to gain understanding and knowledge. Many of these documents come in the form of a research experiment. Starting with an introduction, what their main goal is to change/improve, the methods that follows and the results. These books and journals are ways to allow anybody within this discourse community to access, gain knowledge, and build upon. By building upon certain methods, this allows for new different approaches and advancements within medicine, because medicine is always changing with time. This form of communication can help, al...
