Emailing Your Member of Congress

You will write an email to a member of Congress. You decide which member of Congress
you write to, the U.S. House of Representatives or U.S. Senate in Washington D.C. The subject of
your email is up to you. There is no minimum requirement for length, but you should ask at least
two relevant topics. Here are topics you could write about:
● What you think of their job - Would you find it interesting? Boring? What training did they
● Suggest a new law - What’s an idea you have? You can ask what they’ve been working on.
● Ask them what their stance is on a current issue (Russia investigation, school funding, gun
reform, legalizing marijuana, road funding, etc...).
● Any other topics you might think of that would be appropriate! :)
You MUST include that you are a Senior at South Pointe High School in your email.
Also, let them know if you are of voting age! Your email must sound “professional”, no slang,
few contractions, grammatically correct, punctuation and capitalization are
Be sure to ask some questions so that they might write you back. At the end of your
email, include something like "Thank you for reading my email. I look forward to reading
your response." or "I appreciate you taking time out of your busy day to read my email. I am
excited to read your response." This will get them to respond! After “Sincerely….your name”....
They want to make sure they really represent you!
