Sports First Aid
As I am the coach of the Harristown Netball team, I have a duty of care set in place for all the team. As a player has collided, stumbled and appears to be unconscious, it is recommended that they’re cared for under the first aid response of DRSABCD. Since this is a head injury and the player is unconscious, it is a serious problem. Without the use of DRSABCD, the player could suffer from issues later in life. As the first step in DRSABCD is danger, the game should immediately be stopped so that you, the player or any bystanders do not get harmed. After this, check the response by asking COWS questions, can you hear me?, open your eyes, what’s your name?, squeeze my hand. Although they appear unconscious and may not respond, you should still proceed in this step. While doing so, it is recommended that a parent is calling ‘000’ and a child from the team is getting a first aid kit or a more trained person with a defibrillator. Although the player is likely to have choked on anything, when stumbling there’s a chance that they could’ve bitten their tongue, then end up choking on the blood.
