The Price of Freedom
What is the price for freedom? Freedom means different things to different people and the meaning of freedom has changed over the years but the meaning of freedom for me is the ability to do things you wanted to do and be independent. Jennifer Hicks is the director of the Academic Support and Writing Assessment program at Massachusetts Bay Community College. Her essay talks about Kate Chopin’s work, “The Story of an Hour” and themes of female self-assertion, until this day. Chopin’s work is a mainstay of feminist literary study. The story is about Louise Mallard after she learns about her husband’s death due a railroad accident. Her reactions and emotions after learning about her husband’s death reveal a sense of joy.
Louise Mallard is a woman who has been in deep suffering, she is not only suffering from an oppressive marriage, but she is also suffering from her existing heart disease. The story suggests that Louise’s life under the patriarchy of contemporary society is choking and weakening her. She is oppressed by her husband, Brently, and is not free to do anything without his consent. She always longs to be free from of his oppressive behavior to the point that she prays that her life to end. She wants to end her life just to get away from her marriage. The story doesn’t mention Louise if she has any children which is a clue that that she detests being married.
