Sentinel City Assessment
Task 1 C228

Demographics Assessment
The virtual world of Sentinel City is an assessment tool we are given to help bridge a gap from being novice nurses to more becoming more effective and well rounded ones. It affords us an opportunity to engage with a community in order to assess its potential health risks and safety issues. To fully understand and assess Sentinel City, we must understand some basic demographics. The overall population of the city is 663,862. The 18 to 65-year age range is the largest sector of the population at 60.4%. A pediatric group of 5 years and under represent 7.4%, an adolescent group comprises 21.7 % of the population, (under 18 years) and a gracefully aging population 65 years and over weighs in at 10.5%. (Sentinel City 2018) Ethnically, the city is comprised primarily of Caucasians at 80.6%; intermixed with Latinos/ Hispanics representing 31.5%; and African Americans 10.4%. Asians represent 3.7% of Sentinel City, 2% is American Indian or Native Alaskan, and 0.2 % are Native Hawaiian. (Sentinel City 2018). The median household income of Sentinel City, according to the statistics provided, is $49,091, although this figure fluctuates greatly between the four different geographic areas of the city, and 18.9% of the whole population live below the poverty level. (Sentinel City 2018).
As mentioned earlier, the city itself is subdivided into four quadrants. Nightingale Square has a population of 103,974 residents, with Caucasians representing 81.3 % of this figure. It represents the highest income bracket in Sentinel City, with a median household income of $269,550, with only a mere 0.7% of those whom do not have health insurance. Acer Tech Center has a population of 168,390 residents, also predominantly Caucasians, with only 13.7% represented by Latino/ Hispanics. The median income level is the second highest in the city here, at $166,300, with only 1.5% of residents without health insurance. (Sentinel City 2018)
Casper Park District is the most densely populated area of the city, with a population of 352,642 residents. We begin to close the ethnicity gap in this region, as the primary race is 63% Caucasian and Latino / Hispanics represent 24%. The median household income of Casper Park District is $80,134, and 22.7% of the population is uninsured. (Sentinel City 2018). In the next area, Industrial Heights, there are 38,855 residents. This is representative of the lowest census in the city (amongst the four distinct areas). The prevalent ethnicity here is Hispanic/Latino (46.8 %), and African American (13.1%). The median household income here is a mere 24, 672, dangerously close to the national poverty level in 2017 for a four-person family. (PeopleKeep). We also see a sharp increase in the number of uninsured residents of the area, a staggering 37.5%. (Sentinel City 2018).
