Social Economy is a counter economy created to fight against the general economy today.It confronts globalization and is built to include those that capitalist driven economies purposely neglect and exploit. It specifically caters to local people and the communities they are involved in to have a sense of financial voice and stability. It is a form of resistance against criminal globalization. What this kind of economy does is identify the social and basic needs of a community and ensure that they are met. Ways in which this is done is throughout the world is through, community enterprises, self-help projects, housing associations, credit unions, partnerships and co-operatives. Social Economy’s main objective is not to make maximum money - as they aim to build social capacity that all members of society can benefit from. It was not an economy that was taken serious when it originally started. This was primarily because it did not generate employment, entrepreneurship, or produce income. An example would be Garmeen Bank and the way in which it had given financial support to the local women in the community to create businesses of their own.
Social Economy brought forth many different types of movements regarding the injustices in the world. One of them is Earth Democracy and Shiva describes it a movement that encourages economic democracy, involvement of communities, advocating for the peace of the planet and the peace of people. In more depth, Shiva explains that Earth Democracy is something all human beings need to take part in as we have to protect the planet. We owe everything to the earth - the earth owes us nothing.
